Rusumo Village and Orphanage Water Storage Project Nearly half a mile from the orphanage, villagers fill water jugs from a mountain spring and the orphans as well. Given that the minimum weight of these water containers would average 35 to 40 pounds, it's just too difficult for the children to do on a daily basis, sometimes twice a day. In June and July of 2008, HIP & EWB collaborated on a small Water Storage Project for the Rusumo Orphanage. This required that HIP arrive in Rwanda one week ahead of the EWB group, procure the materials for the project, and have them placed on the project site. Local labor was then organized with the help of a third party in the village, and tools were provided and excavating began. The end benefit of the project: Collected spring water is delivered to a downhill storage tank with a total capacity of 10,000 liters. The location of this tank is now within 50 feet of the orphanage as a sustainable water supply affording the children more productive time and energy.
Rusumo Village Water Project Working with Engineers Without Borders HIP helped finance and build a clean water source for an entire village in Rwanda., A.water source high in the mountains was tapped and directed to a filtration station and on to spigouts to serve both the village and an orphanage..
