The Abantu Café Project in Dayton, Ohio

Creating an environment for newcomer families who arrived here as refugees to feel at home, to prosper and to contribute to our great community.

Cook and share meals 

Listen  Learn  Advocate  Collaborate

Abantu is the Kirundi word for “people” and invokes the African ethics of “I am, because you are”.

‘Café of the people’ has the spirit of a welcoming space for sharing meals, listening, learning and collaborating

In the long term, we will try to collaborate on growing local food as a meaningful livelihood for the families. Knowledge and resourcefulness of growing food is a gift the families bring to Dayton. Together we have the skills for turning this skill into a way for the families to prosper and contribute to the community.
